The next total eclipse in the US

The recent total solar eclipse on Monday, an event eagerly anticipated in 2024, has passed, leaving millions of sky-watchers enthralled despite occasional cloudy conditions in some areas along the path of totality, where the moon completely obscured the sun.

For those who missed this celestial spectacle, the wait for a similar experience in the same region will be a bit prolonged. However, the enthusiasm generated by this year's eclipse suggests it's never too early to plan for the next one.

An annular solar eclipse, creating a captivating "ring of fire" effect as the moon partially covers the sun, is set to grace the skies over Chile and Argentina in South America on October 2, as noted by NASA.

The subsequent total solar eclipse isn't slated until August 12, 2026, according to Amir Caspi, a principal scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. This eclipse will traverse Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and a small portion of Portugal, with a partial eclipse visible in parts of Europe, Africa, and North America.

Anticipation also surrounds another total solar eclipse forecasted to pass over Egypt's pyramids on August 2, 2027, boasting totality expected to last over six minutes, as noted by Caspi.

In the United States, the next opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse won't occur until March 30, 2033. However, it will be visible primarily in Alaska, with a totality lasting 2 minutes and 37 seconds. A partial solar eclipse will be observable across most of the country during this event.

While much has been made about the subsequent total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous US not happening until August 22, 2044, totality will only be over North Dakota and Montana.

The eagerly awaited total solar eclipse with a coast-to-coast path spanning the Lower 48 states is scheduled for August 12, 2045. The path of totality will stretch over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, with a partial eclipse observable in other states.

For those still captivated by eclipse phenomena, traveling to witness another may be worthwhile.
